BBC Radio Merseyside Sports Presenter Alan Jackson hosted the evening and the guest speaker was one of Britain’s greatest ever 400m athletes, Derek Redmond. Director of Merseyside Sports Partnership Jean Stephens believes the event was once again a resounding success:

“This prestigious annual event is essential in raising the profile of our sporting achievements across Merseyside, and in helping to raise money for the local sports council bursary funds.

“These funds are an invaluable resource for our talented sports people of the future, assisting with the cost of professional training, transport to competitions and equipment. It’s even more important to recognise the importance of available funding for our athletes in the current financial climate and with London 2012 in less than two years time.

“Merseyside Sports Partnership is very proud to facilitate this event, which has been made possible by the support of our award sponsors and those attending tonight.

“We can feel very proud of our achievements this year, especially those who have been nominated for awards and of course, tonight’s winners.

“Together, we can make a difference to the quality of life for all people in Merseyside through sport.”
